What is Sustainability?

The goal of sustainability is to exist in productive harmony with our natural environment, meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations. How we practice this looks different around Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»­, spanning across departments, clubs, academic programs, and many other areas on campus.

At larger scales, sustainability refers to attaining and ensuring a long-term balance among complex social, economic, and environmental systems. As it sounds, sustainability often involves interdisciplinary tasks driven by the unique details of many different positions in diverse fields:

Sustainability professionals use science and technology skills to create and manage complex systems in businesses, governments, non-profits or education. As it sounds, this involves interdisciplinary work driven by the unique details of the job, for example: a consulting firm that engineers or sells renewable energy systems an agency or university developing management plans for coastal parks with scientists and fishermen a corporation that maps and optimizes complex supply chains from around the world a non-profit firm working to bring scientific research into public policy.

With rapid improvements in technology, sustainability plays a role in not only gaining access to these technologies to operate more efficiently, but also being a driving factor that assists in regulating them. Sustainability can exist anywhere. Visit AASHE’s , where you can find higher-education sustainability resources and happenings in diverse areas of universities that you may not think of when you imagine practicing sustainability. Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s University Sustainability Council reports to STARS, which is a program through AASHE that accumulates all sustainable happenings at higher-education institutions and rates them, on an annual basis. Sustainability programs include a B.S. in Environmental Science in Sustainability or a minor in Sustainability. See full program information at the Academics page.

Academic sustainability programs combine with student research projects to create products that directly benefit students while trailblazing innovations. Every student in the major and minor programs develops a capstone research project on- or off-campus within a two-course sequence of project classes. These projects can be adaptable to a double-major with other science, engineering, and education degrees.

There are also interdisciplinary research opportunities across campus within many departments among Âé¶¹´«Ã½Ó³»­’s five colleges. These include the Department of Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences, and The Nathan M. Bisk College of Business. More information can be found at the Research page.

The Program in Sustainability undergraduate degree is based in the large and hybrid Department of Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences (OEMS). OEMS has several related graduate programs including a M.S. in Environmental Resources Management with many sustainability options. The Science Education Program also offers a Master’s of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in which students can focuses on sustainability coursework and research.
