The fast-evolving communications industry requires professionals with relevant experience to guide students in mastering professional excellence, ethics and leadership.

Faculty expertise spans public relations, corporate social responsibility, healthcare, crisis management and politics, and the curriculum is kept current to meet the demands of today's global communication landscape.

The faculty is also involved in communication research, often collaborating alongside students, on topics such as corporate social responsibility, reputation management or political communication.

Learning both in and out of the classroom broadens students' experience, helping them understand key aspects of fields like advertising campaign planning and developing integrated marketing communications plans.

You’ll take a practicum course early in the program to start building your experience in media production. In your junior or senior year you’ll complete a communication internship.

Students have completed practicums and internships at local public relations agencies, corporate communication offices, media organizations, healthcare marketing departments, athletic communication departments (both collegiate and professional), fundraising and development offices and in event planning and marketing, among other areas.

In your senior year design project you’ll apply what you’ve learned through your classes and practicum and internship experiences to develop and present a media-related project.

From conceptualization, proposal writing and strategic planning to your final report and presentation, your project will showcase your ability to plan, execute and analyze a specific communication scenario.

Projects might include planning a marketing campaign for a class “client,” producing a documentary or developing a crisis communication plan.

If a master's degree in communication is in your future, you can get a head start while you complete your bachelor's. 

Eligible multiplatform journalism students can earn graduate-level credit hours during their senior year and apply up to 6 credit hours to both their bachelor’s degree and the M.S. in global strategic communication. Students can finish their master's at least one semester early through this program.

However, human insight and creativity is crucial to effectively—and strategically—convey information in a broader context.

In the strategic communications degree program, you’ll acquire skills to navigate ethics, understand audiences and master the nuances of language. You'll analyze and refine messages for clarity and impact, ensure communication is respectful across a range of perspectives and apply creativity to make content engaging and impactful.

Along with the research, analysis and critical thinking skills needed for compelling communication, you’ll also learn how to use technology as a tool to enhance your effectiveness in your career.
