Process for Policy Review and Revision
Policy Owners are the individuals responsible for implementing, communicating, reviewing, updating, and monitoring a University Policy and its implementation for compliance and effectiveness.
The Policy Owner is responsible for:
- Reviewing owned policies and identifying needed revisions.
- Drafting proposed policy revisions or new policies, in consultation with impacted stakeholders.
- Sending new and revised policies to legal@fit.edu for review and approval.
- Maintaining associated procedures, guidance, and operational processes related to the policy.
- Identify new policy needs owned by the responsible office.
The Policy Team (Office of General Counsel) is responsible for:
- Reviewing proposed policies and revisions for consistency, formatting, legal requirements, regulatory compliance, and alignment with university standards.
- Coordinate additional review with policy owner and other stakeholders as needed.
- Assisting the department with policy development, stakeholder engagement, and policy governance questions, as needed.
- Send policies to the appropriate approval authority (President, Provost, General Counsel, CFO) for approval.
- Notify policy owner of approval and update/upload on the policies website.
- Work with Policy Owner and Web Services to communicate new policy or major changes to staff and faculty as needed.
- Review and identify new policy needs; recommend edits to current policies.
Policy Development
Policy development is a collaborative process that may involve multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts. Participation in the drafting, review, coordination, or publication of a policy does not establish policy ownership.
The Office of General Counsel may provide legal, regulatory, compliance, and governance guidance; facilitate policy development and stakeholder review; and assist with drafting and implementation.
