(James) Shea Duross
Meet Shea! He is a junior studying Humanities-Literature in the College of Psychology and Liberal Arts.
Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Shea chose Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» for its reputation in developing well-rounded, skilled professionals, particularly in leadership, as a STEM-focused school. As a former Navy helicopter rescue swimmer with extensive experience in high-risk operations, he sought a university that would allow him to build on the skills he developed in the military. Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»’s supportive environment for disabled veterans, combined with its strong academic programs, made it the ideal place for Shea to transition into civilian life and further develop as an individual. He knew the university would challenge him to excel academically and strive to be the best version of himself.
As a President’s Ambassador, Shea hopes to fully immerse himself in the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» experience. As a non-traditional student, he aims to embrace every moment while enrolled and foster genuine, lasting relationships across academic and professional communities. He also hopes to expand his knowledge and perspective through the program.
After graduation, he looks forward to reflecting on his journey and celebrating his achievements. He hopes to continue to make a difference in others' lives while embodying the rescue swimmer motto: “so others may live.”
His favorite thing about Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»: “The close professor-to-student ratio and the relationships we’re able to develop through it.”
His involvement at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»: Alpha Alpha Alpha Honors Society
His involvement off-campus: Volunteers during natural disasters for emergency rescue missions. Currently pursuing his EMT certification, and is a licensed Coast Guard boat captain and PADI Divemaster.
